Shock Wave: Movie Review

When your friend tells you that Asian cinema isn’t worth the bother, then they are truly lying. China has in the past been known for producing some really good movies and Shock Wave is one of those.

Shock Wave is a 2017 Hong Kong-Chinese action film written and directed by Herman Yau, produced by and starring the awesome Andy Lau. The film marks Yau and Lau’s third collaboration as director and star respectively after 1991’s Don’t Fool Me and 1999’s Fascination Amour.

The movie stars Hung Kai-pang (Jiang Wu) who plays the role of the terrorist Blast and Andy Lu, a police officer and bomb for Hong Kong police.

Cheung Choi-san (Andy Lau) plays the role of a superintendent of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau for the police force in Shock Wave.

Seven years ago, Andy had gone undercover and became the protege to Jiang Wu, a wanted criminal specializing in bombs. During a cash vault robbery, Cheung revealed his undercover identity and whilst coordinating with the police, successfully disposed a bomb, preventing from being detonated.

In the event, Hung’s criminal gang, in the car where Cheung was in, was captured including Hung’s younger brother. However, during the explosive commotions, Hung manages to escape and threatens to return for revenge.

Why watch Shock Wave?

Believe me when I tell you that Shock Wave isn’t just another low budget Chinese movie as some might believe but rather it builds an interesting story between two characters that are not ready to give up no matter what.

Andy Lau’s performance as a bomb expert for the police is quite refreshing meanwhile Hung Kai-pang pulls off an impressive display as the terrorist named Blast who goes against all odds just save his brother even if it means blowing up bridges and taking innocent lives.
