Shocking discovery as four million plus Nigerian Christians refuse to celebrate Christmas. The Pew Research Center, Nigeria has put the population of Nigerian Christians at over 85 million.
According to the research, Nigeria has the largest Christian population of Christians in Africa with various denominations, saying that the number of Christians in Nigeria has grown from 21.4 per cent in 1953 to 49.3 per cent in 2010.
Over four million Nigerian Christians won’t bother celebrating Christmas this Sunday, December 25,and will treat the day as any other working day.
Among the Christians, around 300,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses in Nigeria will also not celebrate Christmas as their teachings do not allow them to celebrate religious holidays or birthdays.
Jehovah’s Witnesses believe December 25 being recognized as the birth day of Jesus came from the Pagan tradition of the birth date being near the winter solstice. Pagans worshiped the sun god and tried to convince Christians to observe their tradition by telling them it was Jesus’ birthday.
Seventh Day Adventist and God’s Kingdom Society are also other religious groups that don’t celebrate the festive season.
Technically speaking, of the four million Christians that won’t take part in this pagan tradition, the remaining percentage of that 85 million will enjoy the rice and chicken since Nigerian is known for its popular chicken rice dishes.
