Mahershala Ali known for his performance in the Luke Cage Netflix series as “Cotton Mouth” made history on Sunday night’s Academy Awards ceremony when he became the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar.
Ali was recognised for his performance as a supporting actor in “Moonlight,” the story of a young black man coming to terms with his sexuality, which drew praise from the Muslim American community.
Ali had this to say after winning his Oscar; “It’s not about you, it’s about these characters,” he also said. “You are a servant. You’re in service to these stories and these characters.”
Ali isn’t the first and only Muslim to have been recognised in the Academy Awards before. Actors like the late Omar Sharif were nominated for Lawrence of Arabia but didn’t win.
On Sunday night, Ali became the first African American man in more than a decade to win an Oscar.
