Ugandan Girl Arrested for Kissing Another Girl

A young Ugandan girl believed to be 8 years old was arrested for kissing another girl which was termed as same sex practices that country’s law is against.

Reports suggest that the police is holding the young girl on suspicion of being gay/ lesbian and she will remain in their custody until the matter is resolved.

The incident was reported in by a neighbor who claimed to have seen the two girls kissing and engaging what they called inappropriate behavior.

The concerned neighbor who reported the girls said they were having a “romantic relationship” and “engaging in inappropriate behavior” as some of the sources claimed.

This arrest was seemingly rushed and is a violation of the girl’s rights. Many have spoken ill and feel Uganda’s law on LGBT is rather cruel and against human rights.

A member of the East African faction of Amnesty International said: “The girl should be immediately and unconditionally released if she is still in detention.

What she needs is protection and respect for her privacy, rather than being treated as a criminal.”

The LGBT law in Uganda specifically states with the following statues;

Section 145. Unnatural offences. Any person who—

(a) has carnal knowledge of any person against the order of nature; [or]
(b) has carnal knowledge of an animal; or
(c) permits a male person to have carnal knowledge of him or her against the order of nature,

commits an offence and is liable to imprisonment for life.

Section 146. Attempt to commit unnatural offences. Any person who attempts to commit any of the offences specified in section 145 commits a felony and is liable to imprisonment for seven years.

This act was passed and changed references from “any male” to “any person” so that grossly indecent acts between women were criminalized as well, and are now punishable by up to 7 years imprisonment.

The story behind these two young girls still remains uncertain as one remains in custody of the police against her own will.
